For Juliet, design serves as a powerful catalyst for nostalgia and self-expression, allowing her to tap into her past experiences and envision her future as an African child. through her work, she aims to establish a sense of place and identity, drawing on four key pillars: culture language, design and fashion. this concept led her to explore the idea of creating an object that would carefully preserve and showcase a cherished heirloom, the khanga, one that embodies the rich cultural heritage of her community through language, written script, and traditional communication.

The khanga holds a special significance, being a traditional garment that has been passed down through generations of women in her family, symbolising a connection to her ancestors and a commitment to preserving cultural traditions. It is a symbol of dignity and respect, worn with pride by her grandmothers, mothers and now herself, and destined to be passed on to future generations. Specifically, Juliet sought to design and object that would not only protect and display this heirloom but also reflect and honour the heritage it represents.
